Augusta was first charted in 1622 by the Dutch East India Company ship Leeuwin. It was founded as a town in 1801.
Augusta is home to a number of historical sites that reflect its early settlement and coastal heritage. Landmarks such as Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse, Ellis Street Jetty, and the Old Augusta Police Station and Gaol highlight the town’s maritime and colonial past, while St John the Baptist Anglican Church and the Augusta Historical Museum offer further insight into its early community life. Pioneer Park, with its settler memorials and graves, remains a significant reminder of Augusta’s origins.
